The United Nations have dubbed 2015 as the International Year of Light. The world has finally realized that the incandescent light bulb – a concept dating back to Thomas Edison’s day – is obsolete, due to its energy inefficiency. The goal of the International Year of Light 2015 (IYL 2015) is to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health by highlighting the importance of light and optical technologies in their lives, for their futures and for the development of society.
IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today. IYL 2015 will kick-off with opening ceremonies to be held January 19th and 20th in Paris.
Everywhere in the world our days begin with light. Light is life. Light connects us with others – near and far. It entertains and inspires both young and old. Light enables us to see things never imagined. It will drive economies of the future. With light, we can diagnose and treat disease. It helps protect and secure our communities. Light will be key to discovering solutions to society’s most pressing problems. And as the lights go down around the world and our days end, our future will continue to be enabled by light. The UN
Why Light Matters
Lighting represents almost 20% of global electricity consumption (International Energy Agency). The future development of society in both developed countries and emerging economies around the world are intimately tied up with the ability to effectively light our cities, homes, schools and recreation areas.
Social media, low cost telephone calls, video conferencing with family and friends – these are three examples of how the internet allows people around the world to feel connected in a way that has never before been possible in history. And all of this technology exists because of light!
