Light qualities of illumination and color temperature have been found to affect student reading and learning abilities. Light settings vary greatly in classrooms, which has lead to important questions of how educational and industrial designers can select lighting for optimizing teaching and learning.

Below are a few excerpts from a 2011 research study on lighting entitled Illuminating the Effects of Dynamic Lighting on Student Learning.

Discomfort and impaired visual & cognitive performance

Winterbottom (2009) suggested that certain features of lighting can cause discomfort and impair visual and cognitive performance. The purpose of his study was to determine the degree and magnitude to which students are subjected to lighting inefficiencies in the classroom.

His research found that discomfort and visual impairment can result from, “Imperceptible 100 Hz flicker from fluorescent lighting and glare induced by daylight and fluorescent lighting,”.

Other general lighting issues were that many of the classrooms had “an unnecessarily inefficient form of fluorescent lighting that has been shown to cause headaches and impair visual performance,” while some were “over-lit with excessive fluorescent lighting and excessive daylighting,” (Winterbottom, 2009).

Blood pressure and full-spectrum lighting

Another study (Grangaard, 1995) measured how “color and light” had an effect on eleven six-year old students’ on-task and off-task behaviors and their blood pressure measurements. The children went through three phases of testing in which each lasted for ten days. During this time, the students were videotaped for fifteen-minute intervals at the same times each day and their blood pressure was also measured each day. The results showed that a decrease appeared in the children’s blood pressure during the second phase in the experimental classroom with blue walls and full-spectrum lighting.

Enhance Learning Environments With Full-Spectrum LED Lighting

If you haven’t upgraded the lighting at your school in recent years, there’s a huge opportunity to make a simple improvement that will have a BIG impact! T12 & T8 fluorescent lighting is outdated and lower in light output compared to modern LED lighting options. You probably don’t realize it, but you’ll surely notice the difference once you make the switch.
