A lumen is a unit measuring the brightness of a light
Posted in General by Net Zero USA
To understand how bright an LED lamp or fixture is, simply look at the number of lumens (lm) on the product specification sheet. The higher the number, the more light that is emitted from the source.
By definition, lumen or lm represents “a unit of luminous flux in the International System of Units, that is equal to the amount of light given out through a solid angle by a source of one candela intensity radiating equally in all directions.”
While you may have used wattage to judge the brightness of fluorescent bulbs in the past, lumens are the correct unit of measurement for LED lighting technology.
Watts = Energy
Lumens = Brightness
Additionally, you’ll want to understand the color temperature and CRI of any LED lighting product under consideration for your project.
