A Truly Bright Idea!

On October 7th 2015, a team of Japanese physicists and an American-Japanese electronics engineer were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. The success will forever be remembered, and each year on October 7th we celebrate their incredible achievement: the development of blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
Early LED technologies of the 1950s had extremely low light intensity, such as the calculator displays you may remember from middle school math class.
Shuji Nakamura, Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano’s discovery of the potential for short-wavelength, high-intensity blue LED has led to numerous innovations and advancements which all produce more light and transmit more information. Such innovations include Blu-ray players, optical fiber networking and incredible screen brightness of today’s tablets and smartphones.
The traditional “bright white” LED light that we’ve all come to know and love is actually a combination of blue LEDs and doped phosphors.
Although the first LED devices were costly and inefficient, R&D combined with mass manufacturing has allowed LED lighting to become a very popular and energy-efficient replacement for incandescent lighting.
Cheers to National LED Light Day and the team of geniuses that unlocked the LED lighting equation – brightness and visibility would not be the same without them!
